Dancer Recital Costume Portraits

Dance recital season is one of my most favorite times of year! Unlike other activities that have weekly games or competitions, dancers typically work an entire school year perfecting their skills, and their year-long efforts culminate in their annual recital. Dancers hone their technique, learn choreography, work on teamwork during classes for months and months…all the while also grasping the valuable lesson of delayed gratification! (And as a dance mom, I reap the benefits of that particular lesson each year as well: just when I am on the verge of refusing to replace hole-y tights, finding random bobby pins in my own shoes (?!), and scrambling to manage the dance carpools to BSD on top of other springtime busy-ness: it’s RECITAL SEASON, and I could nearly burst from my excitement and anticipation about seeing my own daughters on the stage, doing what they love so!)

Watching my own daughters dance is such a phenomenal experience as a mother: seeing their strong capable bodies move with such grace and witnessing them doing something they love… What a gift as a parent! And photographing dancers in their various costumes, incorporating some steps from their dances –this is a way to document and preserve this precious memory. It is certainly a honor to be able to photograph so many lovely dancers each spring!
